Father Sharpe, the Parish Priest of Dhanbad felt the pulse of the people for a school in the city and along with Mother Violette and Sister Terese settled an agreement with Lindsay Club Dhanbad to start a primary school in January 1956. The year 1956, is a memorable day in history of Dhanbad, for the town has Apostolic Carmel added to its list. “Not art, not books, but life itself is the true basis of education”. By 1960, the strength of school increased and the year 1970 saw a secondary school and a boarding house established. It was, however, discontinued in 1977. In 1990, the plus two classes were opened with science, arts and commerce. The school at present has over 1800 students. The first batch of Carmel School answered the Bihar Board Examination in 1972 and continued for the coming three years. In 1975, the school was affiliated to All Indian Council for Secondary Education (I.C.S.E.) and now has more than 100 students appearing for I.C.S.E. and I.S.C. every year. Year after year, Carmel continues to produce many who topped with flying colours in I.C.S.E. as well as I.S.C. Carmel Dhanbad has always taken up welfare projects showing empathy towards the weaker sections of society, be it a rally for the cause of leprosy, be it a seminar for Aids or observing the social service week. Carmel Dhanbad has been rendering its incomparable service to humanity since fifty years. It firmly believes that education is a life long process and we require immense patience to establish the foundation on which the structure of life may rise and shine. With its goal of imbibing both intelligence and character to help to attain virtue with a purpose, Carmel fraternity still continues to guide individuals towards to a higher level of awareness, understanding and kinship with all living things. In 2006, the school celebrated its Golden Jubilee. |
