An excursion to Bokaro Thermal by Mother Theodosia and Avila Community in June 1954 sparked the inspiration for a school there. During their stay at the ladies club, Mr. Laheri, the managing engineer of the Thermal plant, approached Mother Theodosia requesting her to start an English Medium school at Bokaro for the children of the D.V.C. employees. This request was favoured by Mother Sylvia the then Superior General. With the encouragement of Mr. Lahari, the D.V.C. managing engineer together with the support and generous hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Chapman the Catholic American couple on 6th January 1955 the pioneering batch of Sisters Hilda (Superior and Headmistress), Ethelrida, Leonora and Basilla officially started the school. There were 66 students in all upto class V.
By and by students increased in number. In October 1962 the Sisters shifted to the new building where at present the Carmel High School is situated.
It was declared a Hindi Medium school in 1972 and received permission from the Bihar Board to start the High School. While classes I to V remained English Medium, Classes VI to X turned into Hindi Medium. The Hindi Medium High School was recognized by the Bihar Board on the first of January 1977 and on 11.4.1978 received the Minority rights. On December 18th 1980 the High School received the grant in aid.
Primary School English Medium was upgraded to Class X and is affiliated to ICSE.
Due to the bifurcation of the Bihar State the school faced problems. A lot of official work was held up. Mr. Ravinder Pandey (M.P.) was invited to Carmel High School for a programme. He offered a few computers and monetary help to purchase furniture and library books.
